Remember Lorena Bobbit and Monica Lewinsky? What do these two have in common with the Big DVD Store on the corner, CSI, the LA Times and Guitar Hero?
All of the above are (or push) products that we have lapped up for decades in whatever format (and with what ever content) delivered. In the past, when we had the audacity to complain about the redundancy, we were told we wanted it.
Several industries made a new bad list today, the list that predicts you might as well invest in buggy whips, and at the top are industries such as Newspapering, CD / Video stores, Recording and TV industries, really any industry that’s been shoving “information and entertainment” down our throats.
What this means, is that it’s quite possible we really didn’t want 6 varieties of CSI and another 6 of Law and Order, MONTHS of Monica Lewinsky, and a drawer load of $89.00 games. We may not even want all that reality TV crap, or the latest Lohan scoop.
Forget downloading stolen goods, consider the legit places out there. A particular CD I looked up at HMV asked for 24.99 and the excuse was that it’s rare. This CD has 8 songs on it. I found access to them ALL at iTunes for 10.00, delivered in a format I can use on my PC, Ipod or car stereo.
HOW LONG did HMV think people would pay that kind of cash? WHY did they never think to progress?
The gaming industry is not safe either. One of the largest gaming firms recently cancelled two major projects, one was not even complete yet. This is huge news, and indicative of a lot more than just a singular companies financial situation. Less than ten years ago kids were all encouraged to be the ones creating those games that it turns out… we never wanted THAT much.
At the same time, thousands and thousands of gamers have locked into iTouch and IPad games that were free, or cost 99 cents. These games don’t have robot warriors, and they don’t have explosions, but they have gamers using accounts (characters) for years and years.
How many of these industries or companies will go to their grave demanding we like what they produce? Which ones will find a way to ASK what we want, and which will then distribute it?
When the news won’t stop talking about Obama, Obama’s wife, Obama’s dog, Obama’s breakfast, remember to just move to other news sources.
You ARE being counted:)
