Today, on Canada AM, a piece ran all day explaining that the Baby Boomer population is going to be a problem medically. According to the sources, this massive group of system users are now aging and are going to have to look at some sort of payment system to cover themselves.
What did the government do with all the money this massive group has given them in the way of taxes to date?
Canada ran a money sucking system so horribly for so many YEARS on the dime of this very group, and now that the group needs access to the funds.. lay blame to them for aging.. and CHARGE them more?
I’m not even a Baby Boomer and I’m pissed off.
I run businesses, not hospitals, so I try to be objective with regard to staffing. But every time I walk into a hospital, I have three or four people admitting me at three or four areas. Total 12 people just to check in for an x-ray. Yet I can hit the airport and get checked onto a plane using the card I booked with.
Don’t get me wrong, I know most of the hospital staff does a job. But often the job just doesn’t need doing anymore, often its held there for union purposes. My medical card has had a swipe stripe for over a decade.. yet they still ask me my name and type it in.. ONLY the drug store uses that damn stripe.
The problem is not about a massive aging group, but the fact that we have backed ourselves into a corner when it comes to running the hospitals. YES I can check myself in. YES I can follow the print out that sends me to Gate 23 (OR the xray department with the big sign that says XRAY Department).
NO I don’t need all those guys n gals typing away, it’s the Union who needs their position and dues. What I NEED is the dedicated hard working Nurses who work at the bedside, the Doctors who diagnose and the Surgeons that operate. As a taxpayer I should have the choice to do exactly that, and should enough of us use such a system YES the guys n gals should be looking for new work, not guaranteed redundancy pay and movement to other jobs that have no business being there… all on the backs of the baby boomers (who have already paid a TON into the very system).
Sure it’s one small area in a huge swirling pool of mismanagement and user abuse. But to start NOWHERE, and instead declare this festering group is to blame for their own size burden, and just resolve to charge extra? Nope. I don’t think that’s going to fly in the long run.
I have a feeling politics is about to take an interesting turn, even for the labor party followers.
